Adenosine deamination is catalyzed by an enzyme called adenosine deaminase acting on RNA (ADAR), and results in the formation of inosine in a process called A-to-I RNA editing. RNA editing plays a crucial role in RNA metabolism, splicing, nuclear export and localization. Inosine 5'-triphosphate (ITP) also functions as an alternative substrate for ATPases and GTPases and has been used to study activation and binding kinetics of nucleoside interaction with various ATPases and GTPases.
